UNCTAD is responsible for:
- implementing and following up a set of UN “equitable principles and rules for controlling restrictive business practices” (the "UNCTAD set"), adopted in 1980;
- maintaining and periodically reviewing a model competition law, as a guideline for countries seeking to introduce such a law for the first time;
It is also active in the following competition-related fields:
- technical assistance and capacity building, particularly in developing countries;
- competition advocacy;
- studies on competition and development
The European Commission is an active contributor to UNCTAD including participation in these events:
- UN Review Conference assessing the UNCTAD set (every five years)
- Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Competition Law and Policy - meets at UNCTAD to discuss matters relating to the UNCTAD set (every year)
