The only policy goal for markets is to serve the people. The whole point [of competition rules] is quite straightforward: that there is food on the shelf, at a price families can afford […] that young people with big dreams and fresh ideas can start a new business. […] Because the single market is us (Margrethe Vestager, Making Markets Work for People conference, 27.10.2022 read or watch)

DG Competition is inviting well-known personalities from different fields to debate the ultimate economic and social impact of competition and competition policy on people’s lives. We will ask them to bring to the fore the ‘social’ in the EU’s social market economy

The Markets for People itinerant debate series will come to mid-sized cities in different EU countries between April 2023 and early 2024. Locations, speakers and topics will be identified together with National Competition Authorities, the Commission’s Representations in EU countries, Europe Direct centres and local partners
