Effects of Good and Bad Government

regular_banner

In 1337 the government of Siena, in central Italy, asked Ambrogio Lorenzetti to visually represent its political manifesto and idea of governance. Over the next two years, Lorenzetti would paint a cycle of frescoes showing the effects of good and bad government on the walls of the hall where the city rulers met.

The debate that Making Markets Work for People intends to table is not unlike Lorenzetti's: The impact of public policy on the lives of ordinary people. The details we chose are from the Effects of Good Government in the City, on the eastern wall of sala della Pace in Siena's city hall. They show a well-governed community engaged in education, work and leisure (click here for a picture of this portion of the cycle).
