A competition policy fit for new challenges

The European Union is facing an unparalleled economic and societal challenge: delivering on the twin green and digital transitions and, at the same time, recovering from the coronavirus pandemic by building a more inclusive and resilient economy.

The Commission is conducting a comprehensive and unprecedented review of its competition policy, covering a wide range of policy tools and enforcement practices, to assess whether they are fit for today’s challenges, and to adapt where necessary.

On 18 November 2021, the Commission adopted a Communication summarising the key elements of this review and highlighting how it contributes towards:

  • Promoting the EU’s post pandemic recovery and creating a more resilient Single Market
  • Fostering the implementation of the European Green Deal
  • Accelerating the digital transition.

By the end of this review exercise, the Commission will have carried out more than 20 significant reviews of competition guidelines and notices, in the field of State aid, antitrust enforcement and merger control.
