Taking Competition Policy into the Future

 

On 3 February 2022, DG Competition hosted a half-day conference titled “Taking Competition Policy into the Future”. In addition to digital and green issues, the conference tabled a broader debate on competition policy’s evolution over the next decade.

The hybrid conference took place in the European Commission's Berlaymont building in Brussels and online. 390 people registered as participants and almost 1,000 watched the live stream from 49 countries.

Young experts in the driver's seat

“Taking Competition Policy into the Future” gave a platform to young competition experts who discussed what competition policy would look like ten years from now. It was also an opportunity for today’s practitioners and experts to listen and respond to their vision, views and concerns.

 

The eight winners of the Student Challenges that DG Competition organised in 2019 and 2021 sat in the independent Scientific Committee*. They chose the conference’s format and topics; drafted the call for papers; selected the speakers and steered the debate on 3 February. The call for papers was sent to the over 100 young people who had entered the two Student Challenges.

“Taking Competition Policy into the Future” is EVP Vestager's youth policy dialogue as part of the European Year of Youth.

* The winners of the Student Challenge that was part of the “Shaping competition policy in the era of digitisation” of 17 January 2019 were Rossi Abi-Rafeh, Oriane Limouzin, David Pérez de Lamo and Guillaume Thebaudin. The winners of the Student Challenge that was part of the “Competition Policy Contributing to the European Green Deal” of 4 February 2021 were Despoina Goupou, Agustina Hermida, Ana Popovici and Rosa Warning.
